The Variscale is a unique and accurate mechanical scale which was designed to measure latitude, longitude and any scalar distance on topo maps including UTM, state plane co-ordinate units (feet in most cases) or miles. The Variscale works on any map scale and in any units. The scale can be read from right to left or from left to right. The Variscale has been used by mariners and engineers, architects and draftsmen. The Variscale was originally intended to be used on USGS quad maps but it can just as easily be calibrated to any drawing or map even if it has been enlarged or reduced. The Variscale is essentially an infinitely variable-length scale (ruler).
